American soldiers search for Germans hidden in the hills. Greenland. 1941-45

Gift of the Scanlan Family
Description:

Photograph. Photograph of an illustration of American soldiers searching for Germans hidden in the hills in Greenland. Official caption on reverse: "100943(5). From: Public Relations Division / U.S. Coast Guard / Washington, D.C. Official U. S. Coast Guard. Mixed landing forces of United States Coast Guard and Army Commandos, members of the Navy's Greenland Patrol Expeditionary Force, search the rugged terrain of Greenland for remnants of destroyed German military force. German Naval and military forces were operating a radio and weather station in Greenland which because of its location, made meterological observations of important value to enemy operations in the Norwegian Theatre. Despite low temperatures, mountain climbing in heavy clothing is tough and makes landing forces perspire. One sailor removed his helmet to cool off. Sketched in Greenland by Coast Guard combat artist Norman Thomas." No date
