Items from the service of Steward Second Class Bernard Madison Heard, who served aboard various ships and submarines in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater of Operations. Heard was born on 29 September 1921 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and then a waiter before enlisting in the United States Navy on 2 November 1940. In 1941, he was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-4) and the USS R-13 (SS-90) with the rate of Mess Attendant. On 18 January 1943, Heard was assigned to the USS Snook (SS-279) and patrolled the Yellow Sea and northern region of the Pacific Ocean. He was then transferred to the USS SC-141 in late October 1943. During this time, Heard was a Steward Third Class and was eventually promoted to Steward Second Class by the time he was assigned to the USS Crevalle (SS-291) on 12 September 1945. Heard remained in the Navy long enough to participate in the Korean War. He moved to San Mateo, California, and remained there with his family until his death on 16 September 1994. The collection includes photographs and a letter from Heard to his parents. Featured in two of the photographs is Heard’s older brother, Alcide Vincent Heard (22 December 1915-10 November 2001), who served as a Steward First Class in the United States Navy from 4 August 1937 to 11 July 1957.
