Description:

Photograph. British soldiers take cover behind rock forts on a steep mountainside. Official caption on front: "MM-5-151069." Official caption on reverse: "Sig Corps Photo radioed 12-12-43 / Sig Corps Photo-12-12-43-Italy! British troops dug in, on side of Monastery Hill, Mt. Camino Sector where they lived and fought under the most adverse conditions possible during the days of furious fighting which led to the taking of this important height. Since the ground was too hard for fox-holes, note how the men have formed tiny 'forts' of rock and sand-bags." Monastery Hill, Cassino, Italy. 12 December 1943
