Gift of Beth and Robert Millett, from the Collection of The National World War II Museum
Description:

Slide. Two cautionary tombstones about finding protection from incoming fire in the European countryside, one reading ‘Here lie the remains of G.I. Joe. When Jerry opened fire he had no place to go. He’s cold as a herring. For him a sad plight. He tried to take cover – almost – but not quite. If only he had picked it a moment before. He wouldn’t be dead on this distant shore. – The Ghost of Joe’ and ‘Here lies the bones of G.I. Jones, of death he had no terror. Born a virgin, died a virgin. No hits, no runs, one error. He didn’t take cover.’ Europe. 1945-46
