Official Caption: "Rome, 6/5/45--Wounded U.S. Marine helped to rear--A wounded U.S. Marine, his clothing blown from his back by a Japanese mortar shell, is helped by a companion to a medical aid station at the rear of the fighting lines on Okinawa, main island in the Ryukyu (Loochoo) Chain. The Americans landed on Okinawa, 375 miles (600 kms.) from Japan, on March 31, 1945, and three weeks later controlled three quarters of the island. By June 4, the Japanese were being pressed back relentlessly all along the fighting line in the fourth quarter (southern portion) as the U.S. troops tried to envelop the last 15,000 to 20,000 Japanese troops--FMC photo--serviced by Rome OWI (A list out).
