By May 30, 1945, they entered the ancient Shuri Castle, strongpoint in the Okinawa battle line, in such a swift strike the Japanese defenders were caught relaxing in the cool water of a moat. While some Marine patrols penetrated the fortress, other Marines overran virtually the entire city of Naha. Okinawa, strategic island only 375 miles (600 kms.) from Kyushu, Japanese home island, was invaded by U.S. forces March 31, 1945.--FMC Photo--Serviced by Rome OWI (A List out).
