Two American Navy vessels with barrels of oil near Anzio, Italy in 1943
Gift of Melissa Bourne, from the Collection of the National WWII Museum
Description:
Two American Navy vessels with barrels of oil. 'Gas being unloaded. Elmer Carey. Two main items we unloaded at Anzio was ammo and gas x. They were the two things that made it a bit risky to be around when air raids occurred and they occurred very frequently. Finally Jan. 29th the USS John Banvard got a near miss. Lost all its engine steam and that meant it lost steam to work winches which is the principle source of power.' Anzio, Italy. [1943]
