Description:

Photograph. Dr. Christopher Coates testing fish 'talk' at the Zoological Society Aquarium. Official Caption: "Rome, 6/8/45--Fish talk--Fish utter sounds varied in pitch and intensity according to their condition or mood. With the help of waterproofed microphone lowered into the tank and connected with an oscillograph which optically registers the sound waves obtained, Dr. Christopher Coates of the New York Zoological Society Aquarium was able to detect the sounds and classify them in three groups. When fish get excited, their voices are loud and rapid; when eating, they are loud and steady; when at ease, a kittenish purr.--PBL Photo--Serviced by Rome OWI (A List out).
