"4057 Enlisted man takes over the 'pulpit - A sailor preacher leads hymn singing and gives the Lord's word to his shipmates aboard a Coast Guard manned LST the day before hell broke loose on Iwo Jima. The ship is moving in to the attack which developed into the bloodiest battle of the Pacific on the beaches of the volcanic island only 750 miles from Tokyo. The preacher (right center) is Coast Guardsman Charles R. Roth, Pharmacist's Mate second class, of 296 Prospect Street, Lawrence, Mass." 18 February 1945

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
