Photograph. View of an airfield with ditched Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk at the end of the runway. (The aircraft is marked with three letters GA-E; GA is the two letter code for 75 Squadron RAAF and E signifies the fifth aircraft in that squadron.) The Kittyhawk was the main fighter plane used by the Royal Australian Air Force during the war. Notice the Australian soldiers with slouch hats on the back right side. Items from the service of Vernon W. Layton, who was born in Millsboro, Delaware on 30 June 1918. Layton enlisted in the US Army on 27 January 1941 and was assigned to the 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. After training in Florida and California, Layton was shipped to the Pacific Theatre and was stationed on Papua New Guinea and Borneo. Collection consists of 99 photographs. Many are official photographs from the Military History Section (S.D.9) and show Australian and American troops on Borneo in 1945.
