'File Number: 45, Released: 18 June 12, 1944 Nazi Cliff ( not legible) By Rangers On the heights of this cliff a Nazi gun emplacement commanded a vital sector of a French beach. . . before D-Day. Then at the assigned moment, U. S. Army Rangers struck. Climbing the narrow ladder in the center of the picture with stealth and speed, they 'immobilized' the German gun crew, saved countless lives and tons of shipping and material.' June 1944

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
