526.Photograph 'CinCPac 8017 25 February 1945 Prize of battle Fifth Division Marines, grouped behind their light machine gun, display Jap [Japanese] battle flags captured during the first few days of the bloody fight for Iwo Jima. It was the men of the Fifth who fought their way to the top of Mount Suribachi to raise the American flag on the rim of the crater.' 25 February 1945

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
