Photograph. A man pumps gas into an automobile at a gasoline station, as viewed from second floor or rooftop. Official Caption: "Rome, 5/25/45--Greenbelt: Typical planned community in the U.S--The gasoline station, as well as the stores and theater at Greenbelt, were leased to the non-profit Consumer Distribution Corporation. During the first years of occupancy, this organization ran the gasoline station, and other businesses, and set aside all profits. In January, 1940, after a period of organization, the management and the profits were placed in the hands of a cooperative formed by the town's citizens. Greenbelt has a city manager type of local government. All tenants are eligible to become voters. They elect a council of five members which appoints, and has the power to remove a city manager who is charged with the execution of the policies established by the council.-FFG Photo. Items from the service of Isaac "Ike" Bethel Utley, who was born in Smith Mills, Kentucky on 3 March 1920. Ike enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 19 January 1942. He was shipped overseas to the European Theatre and worked with a supply division based out of the city of Naples with an office set up in a residential villa. Utley worked with the Office of War Information and used their photographs in news articles to inform soldiers of the progress of the war. At war's end, Utley returned stateside. A trunk full of over 800 photographs from the O.W.I. arrived on his doorstep from his office in Italy, sender unknown. This collection consists of those photographs.
