Official caption on reverse: "25 Aug 1944 7/MM-44-2466 / Seventh army, South of Grenoble, France / After being captured by German patrol, 1st Lt. Clarence E. Coggins, Poteau, Okla., convinced German major that escape from Allied troops was impossible. German major then freed Lt. Coggins to arrange terms of surrender with his superiors. Terms were accepted, and so 942 enlisted men, 17 officers, and vast amounts of equipment were turned over to American authorities at Grenoble. Photo by Blau 163rd Sig. Photo Co." From the service of Brigadier General Terence John Tully, a West Point graduate, Signal Officer during the African landings, Chief Signal Officer, Allied Force Headquarters Africa/Italy for all Mediterranean operations. Tully served with the Signal Corps in Italy and North Africa documenting the 5th Army specifically. Later he was Commander of Camp Crowder, Missouri.
