Guarded by U.S. Military Policemen, Japanese prisoners of war in Manila set out to clear the debris from buildings wrecked during the battle for the capital of the Philippines Islands, which was liberated from the enemy on Feb. 23, 1945. By July 2, 1945, five days after organized resistance ceased, 9,774 Japanese prisoners of war had been counted. In the Battle for Okinawa, strategic Ryukyu (Loochoo) island 375 miles (600 km.) from Japan, a total of 9,498 prisoners was taken by June 27. Organized resistance on Okinawa ended on June 20.
