Rome, 5/28/45 -- Milan Police compliment -- Police forces of Milan were complimented for their discipline, training and ability to enforce the law by U.S. Maj. Gen. Willis G. Crittenberger, Fourth Corps Commander, on May 22, 1945, after an inspection and review of elements of four police organizations in the Piazza Castello. The police organizations were cheered loudly as they passed the reviewing station. The parade was led by motorcycle police. Four companies of Carabinieri (policemen), four companies of Guardia di Finance (finance guards) and two groups of partisans marched to the music of the Vigilini Urbini band. A company of town police on bicycles brought up the rear. Afterward, General Crittenberger congratulated Maj. Ettore Giovannini, commander of the Milan city Carabinieri, on his organization of 2,000 Carabinieri during the German occupation. On April 25, 1945, the Carabinieri took over their police duties and provided the city with a law enforcement organization until Allied Forces arrived. -- OWI staff photo -- Serviced by Rome OWI Full.
