French women taking refuge in a cave. First official caption: "ETO HQ 44 28955 7 Dec. Credit---U.S. Army Signal Corps Photo. Photog--T/4 William J. Tomko...166. Refugee women and girls shown in kitchen of cave on bank of Saar River where food was prepared for the 1,7000 civilians from Metz who sought shelter when 3rd U.S. Army troops captured the fortress city. (B). Second official caption: Cave on estate of Franz Von Papen, former German ambassador to Turkey, used by 1700 German civilians who fled from Metz as US Third Army troops advanced to conquer it. The cave is on bank of Saar River, which refugees refused to cross. Von Papen was asked by leaders of People's Army (Volkssturm) to allow them to dynamite the cave, but refused. On December 7 they had spent 21 days in the cave, were running low on food." Passed for publication without censorship restrictions by SHAEF Field Press Censor on 11 December 1944.
