Description:

Photograph. Exterior shot of a duplex home and landscaped yards. Official Caption: "Rome, 5/25/45--Greenbelt: Typical planned community in U.S.--All of the houses in the planned community at Greenbelt, MD., were placed to get maximum sunlight, and windows were arranged to catch the prevailing breeze and look out on attractive landscapes. The use of different materials and varying colors helps to give the houses an individual appearance. All houses are equipped with bath, lavatory, toilet, medicine cabinet, kitchen ranges, sinks and refrigerators. Laundry trays are either in combination with sinks, or separate in utility rooms or basements. Shades, screens and electric fixtures are provided. There are 574 units in group houses, all but 16 of which are two-story dwellings, in the Greenbelt community. Rental for the two-story homes, including heat, runs from $29 a month for seven-room houses; a few with full basements rent for $41 a month. Five detached houses of experimental prefabrication design are included in the community and rent for slightly more than the group houses.-FO Photo---Serviced by Rome OWI (A List Out). Approved by appropriate military authority. 6392-2." Greenbelt, Maryland. 25 May 1945

He was shipped overseas to the European Theatre and worked with a supply division based out of the city of Naples with an office set up in a residential villa. Utley worked with the Office of War Information and used their photographs in news articles to inform soldiers of the progress of the war. At war's end, Utley returned stateside. A trunk full of over 800 photographs from the O.W.I. arrived on his doorstep from his office in Italy, sender unknown. This collection consists of those photographs.
