Consolidated PB4Y Privateer in flight over ocean

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, Gift of Mary Noble, from The collection of the National WWII Museum
Description:

Consolidated PB4Y Privateer in flight over ocean. "File No: TR-7926. The Eyes of the Navy - The Navy's sleek and speedy four-engined PB4Y, hunting out Japs [Japanese] in the Pacific battle. The Navy's conversion of the Liberator to search plane takes just as much construction time as it does to build the original bomber, -- a time well spent for these planes are the eyes of the Navy. With a flying range of 2000 miles, these planes keep the task force informed of what's going on 1,000 miles ahead of it. With the Pacific zoned for complete converage [sic], these planes keep every inch of the Pacific under vigilance. That's why we know what the Jap is doing and that's why the Jap looks upon the PB4Y as 'an evil eye.' - Official U.S. Navy Photograph." Circa 1944
