From: Public Relations Division / U.S. Coast Guard / Washington, D.C. MAYFLOWER TO SEE SERVICE WITH COAST GUARD. Rear Admiral Felix X. Gygax, Commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard, discusses the history of the famed presidential yacht MAYFLOWER during commissioning ceremonies for the vessel, which is going on active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard. Lieutenant Commander Fred E. Morton, U.S. Coast Guard, will command the vessel. The MAYFLOWER served as a presidential yacht for seven presidents, from Theodore Roosevelt to Herbert Hoover. It also participated in the Spanish-American and First World wars. Under the name BUTTE, it will serve as a convoy escort vessel in this war." 19 October 1943

Items from the service of John J. Scanlan Jr., who served in the United States Coast Guard. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, Scanlan worked for a newspaper prior to joining the Coast Guard. During the war, he acquired photographs published by the Public Relations Division of the United States Coast Guard. The collection consists of photographs from most of the theaters of operations and depict life in the field and aboard a ship for Coast Guardsmen and Marines.
