Photograph. Four Australian soldiers checking out the wreckage of a camouflaged twin-engine plane, probably a Kawasaki Ki-45, which was used as a light-bomber by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. Its Allied code name was "Lily." Note the soldier with the beret is holding an Australian Owen submachine gun/Owen Gun and the one standing front of the right wing is carrying the Bren light machine gun/ Bren Gun. Items from the service of Vernon W. Layton, who was born in Millsboro, Delaware on 30 June 1918. Layton enlisted in the US Army on 27 January 1941 and was assigned to the 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. After training in Florida and California, Layton was shipped to the Pacific Theatre and was stationed on Papua New Guinea and Borneo. Collection consists of 99 photographs. Many are official photographs from the Military History Section (S.D.9) and show Australian and American troops on Borneo in 1945.
