604.Photograph 'File Number: 323100 Released: July 19, 1945 In New Hands An air view, looking Southwest, of Yontan airfield at Okinawa after the Yanks arrived. The field, which was captured during the first day of the campaign, now serves land-based fighters attacking the homeland. Haze over the field is dust from planes taxiing down one of the strips. In the top left hand corner can be seen smoke from the still raging battle to the South. To the right supply ships lie at anchor off the beach.' April 1945

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
