Photograph, aerial. View of the muddy, crater-covered terrain of Okinawa. Official Caption: "Rome, 7/16/45--Okinawa after the battle--This is the Okinawa terrain over which the U.S. Tenth Army had to fight over inch by inch to outflank the Japanese fortress City of Shuri. The earth is pocked by shell craters and torn by tank treads, and the whole area is a morass as a result of heavy rains. Okinawa, conquered on June 20, is being developed into a major U.S. base for additional attacks on the enemy homeland only 375 miles (600 km) away.--Army photo through Rome OWI--Approved by appropriate military authority (List A out) 7112."
