7th Infantry Division soldiers walk past Japanese corpses near their abandoned cannon. 'W-CPA-44-106-CO. 2/4. Ellner. A Jap gun and all that is left of its gun crew. The gun was disabled by a shell fired from the nearby island of Enubuj. The gun still ahd the shell in its breech. 7th Div. U.S. Army, Kwajalein Island.' Signal Corps Photograph. Collection of photographs from the service of Brigadier General LeRoy J. Stewart, 7th Infantry Division, Commander of the 76th Field Artillery Battalion, and Chief of Staff who participated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Kwajalein invasion. Stewart was on the US Equestrian Team and participated in the 1932 Olympics. Graduated from the Citadel and West Point. Assumed command of the Field Artillery Battalion in the Aleutians. He later served as Commanding General and Artillery Officer on Kwajelein, Phillipines and Okinawa. He retired in 1951. Deceased January 1983.
