7th Infantry Division soldiers on Kwajalein near a M3 Stuart tank during combat; a few wearing checkered cloths on their shoulders, used as a recognition tool. The soldiers wearing these would be designated to be on the flanks or in the advance company of the assault battalions, they could be easily seen from aircraft to mark the advance or flanks. Collection of photographs from the service of Brigadier General LeRoy J. Stewart, 7th Infantry Division, Commander of the 76th Field Artillery Battalion, and Chief of Staff who participated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and Kwajalein invasion. Stewart was on the US Equestrian Team and participated in the 1932 Olympics. Graduated from the Citadel and West Point. Assumed command of the Field Artillery Battalion in the Aleutians. He later served as Commanding General and Artillery Officer on Kwajelein, Phillipines and Okinawa. He retired in 1951. Deceased January 1983.
