"File Number 252842 June 20, 1944 'Pulling the teeth' of the Nazi Underwater Defenses Clearing Normandy beaches of the tricks and devices set up by the Nazis in a futile attempt to prevent or delay an Allied landing, members of a U. S. Navy Beach Battalion uproot the spider-like obstructions intended to rip out the bottoms of our ships. Though visible at low tide, the obstructions were covered with water at high tide." 20 June 1944

The Charles Ives Collection consists of 719 photographs from the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many of the photographs were taken between 1944 and 1945. Mr. Ives inherited the photographs from a friend from Marblehead, Massachusetts who served as an aviator in the Army Air Corps and discharged as a Major in 1945.
